Arthur R. Deschamps was born in the Grass Valley area, between Missoula and Frenchtown, Montana, on September 9, 1883, the fourth of eleven children of Gaspard and Denise Deschamps. Jeffrey J. Safford was born in 1934. He received his A.B. in music from Wagner College (1956), an M.S. in secondary education (English) from Wagner College (1959), and his PhD in history from Rutgers University (1968).
